The Evolution of Adobe Illustrator

Three decades ago, Adobe introduced its flagship design software Adobe Illustrator as a graphic design, font, and logo development application. This incredible software revolutionised the graphic arts industry – from radio graph pens to the first-ever vector graphics software – and played a significant role in the first digital publishing revolution. Today, more than 180 million graphics are created monthly using Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator is used to create a variety of digital and printed images, including cartoons, diagrams, graphs, logos, and illustrations. Illustrator allows a user to import a photograph and use it as a guide to trace an object in the photograph in both black & white and Colour. This can be used to re-colour or create a sketch-like appearance of a photograph. Illustrator also makes it possible to manipulate text in many ways, making Illustrator a useful tool for creating posters, and other visual designs which use text and images together. Illustrator’s ability to place text around a curve is especially useful for artists creating logos. Illustrator is also used in designing mock-ups which show what the website will look like when it’s completed.

Below, we'll be exploring how Illustrator came to be what it is today.

The software was built in 3 major segments:-

Adobe Illustrator basic versions

Illustrator 1.0 – 10.0

Illustrator came out with a few alright versions, but time would show that versions for Macintosh (Apple) and Windows. Although during its first decade Adobe developed Illustrator primarily for Mac, it supported other platforms. In the early 1990s. The first version of Illustrator for Windows, version 2.0, was released in 1989 and flopped.

Adobe Illustrator CS versions - CS stands for Creative Suite

Illustrator CS – CS6

Adobe decided to store all its successful products together into one big package called the Adobe Creative Suite. Illustrator CS was the first version to include 3-dimensional (3D) capabilities allowing users to extrude or revolve shapes to create simple 3D objects. CS6 brand logo changed it a bit to a brown square with a yellow border and yellow lettering. Adobe added many more features and several bug fixes such as a new user interface, layer panels, and RGB codes to increase performance. CS6 was released on April 23, 2012.

Adobe Photoshop CC versions – CC stands for Creative Cloud

Illustrator CC 2014 – CC 2019

Adobe decided to bring their updates to the cloud. Along with Creative Cloud Illustrator CC was released. This version (the 17th) was the first to be only sold in a subscription model where you have to pay every month/year. As part of Creative Cloud, this version brought improvements in that subject such as colour, font and program settings syncing, saving documents to the cloud, and integration with Behance.

The difference in strengths between Photoshop and Illustrator became clear with the rise of the Internet; Illustrator was enhanced to support Web publishing, rasterization previewing, PDF, and SVG. Version 9 included a tracing feature, similar to that within Adobe’s discontinued product Streamline.

So the purpose of giving an evolution overview of Adobe Illustrator is to understand hard work and journey of Illustrator till date as you noticed there were number of updates for enhancing the software, which help us improve our designs and create what we actually imagine.
